Biography
Chair Professor in Water Engineering, Imperial College London
Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
Prof. Evina Katsou is an internationally recognised expert in water resilience, circularity, environmental systems engineering, and evidence-based sustainability assessment.
She is Chair Professor at Imperial College London and leads the 32-member Resilience and Sustainability Group, a multidisciplinary team integrating advanced digital tools, AI, and data-driven models across water, wastewater, biofuels, maritime-relevant energy systems, and wider industrial sectors.
Prof. Katsou has coordinated or participated in more than 45 European and national R&I initiatives, acting as Principal Investigator in 36 of them. Her work spans digitalisation of environmental systems, circularity metrics, sustainability intelligence platforms, decarbonisation pathways for water-energy-biofuel systems, and evidence frameworks used by utilities, regulators, maritime stakeholders, and innovation ecosystems.
She has developed advanced methods for mapping evolving competencies in regulated sectors and for designing digital decision-support systems that support institutional adaptation and skills transformation. At EU policy level, she serves as a Lead Author in the IPCC AR7 Working Group III and has contributed to the drafting of the Water Resilience Strategy of the European Commission. Her work informs regulatory and institutional transitions driven by decarbonisation, digitalisation, and circularity. She authored the Water4All Call and contributes to DEFRA and Ofwat guidance through successful innovation challenge projects, giving her deep experience in identifying evidence needs, regulatory skill gaps, and sectoral capability requirements.
Prof. Katsou co-leads the ICT4Water Action Group on Intelligent and Smart Systems, chairs two COST Action working groups, and is a drafting member of ISO 59020 on circularity.
She has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, 14 book chapters, over 250 conference presentations, and more than 40 keynotes. Her expertise spans cross-sectoral evidence synthesis, multi-actor coordination, harmonisation of technical knowledge across administrations, and design of structured analytical frameworks to support decision-making and capacity-building.
