Sustainable and connected city: the vision of Zucchetti Centro Sistemi

When it comes to ecological transition, one of the main topics at the heart of the debate is the “sustainable and connected city”, to which Ecomondo (in Rimini from 4 to 7 November) will dedicate an entire area, Circular&Healthy City. The reference approach, One Health, promoted by the World Health Organisation, emphasises the interconnection between human, animal and environmental health, encouraging businesses to strive for solutions that can improve daily life while reducing the impact of various activities.

Forty years of a vision for the future
This is the context in which Zucchetti Centro Sistemi (ZCS) operates. Since the year 2000, it has been part of the Zucchetti Group: founded in 1985 in Valdarno Aretino by Fabrizio Bernini, now shareholder and chairman, over the decades this Tuscan company has transformed itself from a family-run micro-enterprise specialising in software into a multi-business management organisation with offices spread across various Italian regions and an eye on international markets.

With five business units (Software, Automation, Healthcare, Robotics and Green Innovation), it has made the triad of “innovation, sustainability and human capital” its pillar. The goal is to offer customers, both businesses and individuals, intelligent and sustainable solutions, with real savings in terms of costs and time, while respecting the health and safety of people and the environment.

This integrated vision makes Zucchetti Centro Sistemi a key player in the transition from digital to renewable energy, from cloud software to AI, from the eco-sustainability of hybrid photovoltaic systems to data tracking and monitoring systems, and from energy platforms to new satellite navigation systems.

Smart management of urban waste
At the core of the challenge for a sustainable and connected city is, first and foremost, smart and centralised waste management, which favours resource optimisation, waste reduction and improved service quality. At Ecomondo, the Automation Division of ZCS will showcase RU.BIN, the IoT solution that brings real-time traceability and optimisation to waste management, enabling municipalities and service providers to monitor bins, detect fill levels, track access and optimise collection routes.
Each bin becomes a networked data point, contributing to reducing operating costs, limiting emissions and encouraging conscious behaviour in separate waste collection. This ensures monitoring, safety and efficiency in urban waste management: a strategic issue for local authorities, required to comply with increasingly stringent regulations.

Renewable energy and electric mobility
Another crucial cornerstone for a low-emission city is renewable energy, the focus of ZCS's Green Innovation Division. The latest generation of photovoltaic inverters, storage systems and ZCS Azzurro electric vehicle charging stations increase energy autonomy and savings for homes, businesses and communities, contributing to decarbonisation and the achievement of European targets. In support of this, monitoring systems optimise consumption and performance, also thanks to an intelligent interconnection system integrated with the grid.

Digital platforms for sustainability
As sustainability is not just a matter of physical infrastructure, with Sostenibile.cloud, a joint project with Santa Chiara Next, ZCS provides businesses and professionals with a digital platform to measure, improve and communicate their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance. This is a decisive lever for the productive fabric, called upon to combine competitiveness and responsibility through sustainable policies and practices, which, moreover, increase the efficiency and profitability of the company.

Research, education, human capital
Multidisciplinary teams, research laboratories and a strong focus on human capital are behind all these solutions at ZCS, which has obtained all the main industry certifications and registered a total of over 130 patents, covering more than 50 inventions. The beating heart of the company is its Research and Development department, currently employing over 60 technicians and engineers at work to encourage ideas, experiment, and design new solutions that are Made in Italy, and in some cases even Made in Tuscany, destined for increasingly specific and demanding markets.

Finally, with the ZCS Academy and numerous training programmes developed in collaboration with various schools, technical institutes and universities, the company also invests in skills for the youth, educating the professionals who will lead the sustainable and connected city of tomorrow.
