Directive (EU) 2024/1785 also amended Directive 1999/31/EC on the landfill of waste by removing the provision that currently allowed the requirements set out in Directive 1999/31/EC to be recognised as BAT for the sector.
The adoption of conclusions on BAT for landfills under Directive 2010/75/EU should address the main environmental issues related to the operation of waste landfills, including methane emissions. In relation to the start of preparatory work at European level to define the new BAT for landfills, we discuss this with some industry representatives.
