There are over 500 large dams in Italy and they perform important functions for the storage of water for irrigation, drinking and industrial purposes. Other benefits have often been added to the original functions which have become increasingly more important also because the artificial basins have modified the physical and economic configuration of the host territories. As in the entire western world, they were mainly built in the last century and require careful surveillance to preserve their use and avoid risks for downstream populations. Technological innovations also borrowed from other sectors allow us to carry out the activity of possibly corrective maintenance of the defects that have emerged in an increasingly timely, effective and surgical manner. Presentations in this conference constitute a significant although not exhaustive overview of the most interesting interventions of recent years.
