In October 2018, the BLUEMED R&I Initiative for blue jobs and growth in the Mediterranean Area launched a Pilot Action “Plastic-free for a healthy Mediterranean Sea”. Mediterranean countries decided to coordinate and to face together the cross-border threat of plastic litter. The aim is to avoid that the Mediterranean is turning into a plastic trap, endangering not only the environment and human health, but also key economic sectors that depend on a vibrant blue economy and healthy marine ecosystems such as fisheries and tourism. Integrating knowledge and innovation in a circular economy prospective; promoting recycling systems and technologies; supporting sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors; creating new "blue" jobs; inform policies, these are

This BLUEMED special event at Ecomondo2019 will mark a key milestone for turning this Pilot into a success story by showcasing, discussing and developing a portfolio of actions and concrete measures, and mobilise key actors in the plastics value chain for solutions oriented research and innovation.Together we will tackle the "plastic litter" challenge, together we will succeed.
