Biography

Marilene Pisano graduated with top marks in Civil Engineering from the University of Catania and obtained her PhD in Geotechnical Engineering with a thesis on pile-soil dynamic interaction. She is a Researcher in Geotechnical Engineering (SSD CEAR-05/A) at the DICEAM of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria. Her research activity concerns the mechanical behaviour of geosynthetics and soil-reinforcement interaction, studied mainly through experimental activities, as well as the design of reinforced earth structures. Another research area concerns landslides, with particular focus on debris flows, for which she has dealt with the study of protection structures, including reinforced earth embankments and permeable barriers, and the development of monitoring systems aimed at risk mitigation. She has also been involved in soil reinforcement through root systems and has participated in national research projects dedicated to land protection and the mitigation of hydrogeological risks. She carries out teaching activities in courses on Geotechnics, Soil and Rock Consolidation, and Sustainable Geotechnical Works, and delivers lectures within PhD courses on topics related to reinforced earth structures and landslide risk mitigation. She is also involved in the supervision of PhD students and degree theses. She is the author of scientific publications in journals and proceedings of national and international conferences, and has delivered invited lectures on topics related to soil-geosynthetic interaction and landslide risk mitigation. She acts as a reviewer for international scientific journals in the field and has been a member of scientific and organizing committees of national and international conferences and workshops. She is a member of AGI and a member of the Technical Committee on Soil Reinforcement of IGS and of the Technical Committee TC 202 on Transportation Geotechnics of ISSMGE.
