Water and agriculture for inclusive and resilient value chains
Building on Italy’s long-standing partnership with African nations, the Mattei Plan promotes anew model of cooperation based on mutual development, shared prosperity, and joint action for climate resilience. To this purpose, at the heart of Mattei Plan and its vertical sectionalization (energy, agriculture, infrastructures) there is a crucial prerequisite: reliable, sustainable water systems are crucial to climate adaptation policies, to agricultural resilience and urban development. The Mattei Plan strongly supports the “Water Forward Initiative”, a global platform launched by World Bank in partnership with multilateral development banks, development finance institutions and key partners, with the aim to help improve reliable water services for 1 billion people by 2030.
The platform seeks to align policy reforms, financing, and partnerships to creating a powerful framework for addressing water supply, job creation, and economic growth in Africa, through support to reforms, strengthening of institutions, financial performance improvements and investment-ready projects. The common goal of “Water Forward initiative” and Mattei Plan is to address these challenges by helping developing countries build stronger, more reliable water systems that can unlock productivity, support socio-economic development, and enable private investment.
Within this framework, the Africa Green Growth Forum serves as a platform to foster dialogue between governments, development institutions, and the private sector to advance sustainable growth and inclusive water access across the continent.
