Water utilities operate as monopolists in specific areas of the country, so governance and regulation are crucial factors to guarantee and boost performance and sustainability. In Italy ARERA, as well as other regulators in Europe, are rapidly innovating strategies and executive guidelines that aim at benchmarking, assessing and increasing performance and sustainability of water systems management. However, challenges to be tackled concerns issues such as circular economy and reuse of recovered resources (energy, biofuels and materials), innovation procurement, economy of scale and networking to uptake and apply sustainable solutions for sludge management. The workshop will analyze the European and National scenario about role of regulators and impact on the performance of water utilities. Benchmarks and best practice of water utilities with concern to the key performance indicators will be presented and discussed.
