Climate change and its impact on water availability have a decisive influence on the agricultural sector, which currently represents the economic environment in which water consumption is highest (around 80% of water resources in the Mediterranean region). Furthermore, the need to guarantee food security requires the urgent adoption of sustainable water management techniques in agriculture. From this point of view, the role of innovation is crucial, particularly for precision irrigation and sustainable methods for the treatment and safe reuse of treated waste water in agriculture, also in light of the new proposal for a European regulation for the re-use of waste water for irrigation purposes. In this context, "nature-based" methods for low-cost and low-energy management of water resources can increasingly represent a strategic tool to increase sustainability and the circularity of water use in agriculture.
